Faith
Baptist Church was born in the hearts & dreams of 6 families from North
Shore Church in Menominee, MI, that lived in the Peshtigo area. It was
started as a mission work. This was a step of faith, therefore, the church
was named Faith Baptist Church. The 1st service was September 7,
1975. They met for a few months in Ganter Hall & then made arrangements with
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 171 N. Beebe Ave., to share their facilities.
Church services were 9-9:45am followed by Sunday School 9:45-10:30am after
which the Lutheran Church held their service. Rent was $15 per Sunday.
Pastor Curt Holzworth, pastor of the North Shore Church also served
Faith Baptist. Sept. 14, 1976, Faith Baptist was recognized & welcomed into
GLBC, with 24 charter members.
In November 1977, Faith Baptist purchased the Lutheran
Church on Beebe Avenue for the miraculous price of $25,000. They were asking
$64,500. The congregation grew from 6 families in ‘75 to average attendance of
105. Rev. David Bergstrom became the 1st pastor, with his
wife, Jeanette and 3 children; beginning January 1977 & concluded his ministry
July 31, 1979. Interim pastor, Fred Miller & his wife came in January
1980.
October 1980, Rev. Terry Martell accepted the
call as pastor along with his wife Susan, and 3 children. Services were 9:30am &
10:45am, with Sunday school also at 10:45am. The Evening service was 6:30pm.
Successful Wednesday night clubs were started & became known as Family Nite.
June 23, 1985 Pastor Terry was ordained. June 1984 - April 1986 Kevin Johnson
served as assistant pastor of youth, music & discipleship. Leadership of
the church was led to consider a larger facility as the Beebe Avenue church was
bursting at the seams. At the Annual Meeting of January 24, 1988, the members
voted to accept the recommendation of the Deacon Board for construction of our
present facility. Ground was broken May 1988 & the congregation was off &
working feverishly to erect the present structure. This was a great bonding
experience for the body. The 1st service was held in the new church
November 20, 1988. After 13 years, Pastor Terry concluded in September 1993 to
accept a calling as Church Planter in Green Bay. Our Associate, Ralph Larimer
was called in 1989 & finished in September 1994. Pastor Delmar Dahl &
Pastor Don Madvig were interim pastors during 1994 & 1995.
August 1, 1995 Dr. David Selness came to start
his ministry with his wife Patty and their 4 children. Dave & Patty were born &
raised in Minneapolis, but spent 20 years serving in Canada. He was installed on
September 17, 1995. The church felt a deep need to develop ministry to youth &
was led to Dave Wolfe from Iron Mountain, Michigan. Dave began ministry
part-time as Associate Pastor of Youth Ministries on January 21, 1997
while he finished his teaching & coaching commitments, & moved to full-time
March 1, 1997. He & Jessica Dixon were married July 12, 1997. They served in
this role until October 3, 1999.
Little Hands Pre-school began in September, 1999, & was
open to 4-year-olds 3 days per week with Susan Gross as the teacher. This
ministry expanded to include a 3-year-old program 2 days per week as well.
Shelly Majewski joined this ministry as an assistant in September 2002. God then
called Jesse Selness to serve as Associate Pastor of Youth Ministries
at Faith, and his ministry began on April 1, 2000. The son of Pastor & Patty
Selness, he moved from St. Paul, MN to Peshtigo to carry on the church’s vision
for youth in the region. Jesse served until August, 2003 when he began graduate
studies at Wheaton College near Chicago, IL. As the church experienced God’s
blessing, the need for additional staff became apparent, & the church blazed new
territory by creating the position of Associate Pastor of Discipleship and
Christian Education. The very 1st person to fill that role was
Greg Williamson, with his wife Leta and family. Greg moved from being an
elder in the church & a dairy farmer in the area, to part-time ministry in
mid-July & full time ministry August 1, 2000. Greg served until April, 2006,
when he felt called to return to farming.
The church took another step of faith in 2003, voting
to create a full-time staff position for Associate Pastor of Music & Worship,
bringing the number of ministry staff to 4 for the 1st time. Kevin
Grenier served as interim Music Director from May 2004 until October 2005.
Kevin was hired as permanent Director of Worship Ministries October 16,
2005. Kevin & his wife Angie & family came to us from Marinette. Chris Nadolny
served as summer interim Youth Director, 2004, during the search for a youth
Pastor. We concluded our search for a Youth Pastor in November 2004 when we
hired Tim Harwell to serve as Associate Pastor of Youth Ministries.
Tim came on board January 9, 2005. Tim came to us from Abilene, Texas, with 10
years of experience in Youth Ministry.
Archer Leupp, Associate Pastor of Adult Ministries,
is another great addition to the church family. He, his wife, Donna, & their
daughter Kira have come from Prineville, OR. Archer desire to help lead others
into a deeper community with one another & with God, so that others will know
Christ through our actions & our testimony (John 17). He started his ministry
here January 31, 2007.
Some of the God-given gifts & programs that have been
effective in the community & in the body were the excellent gifts of music,
V.B.S., Wednesday Nite Clubs for the kids, MOPS, Community Garden, Quilting &
small group studies. Especially exciting & effective was "The Lord Will Provide"
Program to finance the 1st building program. Over the years the Lord
brought new people through conversion, transfer & personal invitation of
friends; many gifts & much time invested by God’s people has produced the fruit
of changed lives & continuing ministry in the region. No one dreamed in 1975
what God was going to do over the next years. Attendance went from 18 in 1975 to
250 in 1995 to 445 in 2007. A 2nd morning worship service was added
in 1996, & a 3rd worship & 2nd Sunday School in March
2000. In Spring of 2001 new construction began & doubled the size of the
facility with expanded worship space & new Youth, CE & office areas. This
expansion also allowed the church to return to 2 worship service & 1 Sunday
School hour on Sunday mornings. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
