"While spiritual issues can cause problems in your teen’s life, they are usually the result of depression, not the cause."
Let’s face it…we all have bad days. As a parent, it is especially hard to see your teen have a bad day. Because of the emotional roller coaster of the adolescent years, it may seem as if your teen has many more bad days than good. The issue to focus on is when a bad day crosses the line to become a more serious problem. Clinical depression is a very serious issue that affects many teens in the United States. One report states that 1 in 8 teens suffers from depression, and only 30% will receive help from this debilitating problem (about-teen-depression.com). Another question that arises is how do I know if my son/daughter is depressed? In order to have a better grasp on this issue, it is very important to monitor your teen's behavior and moods. As stated below, watch for the symptoms of depression. If these symptoms last more than two weeks, it would be advantageous to talk to someone in your church or a counselor whom you trust.

Depression carries with it a lot of guilt and hurt. Jesus promises us an abundant life. Many Christians feel therefore that we should never have a problem with depression or that depression is due to a “sin issue” that is crippling our life. This simply is not true. While spiritual issues can cause problems in your teen’s life, they are usually the result of depression, not the cause. If your teen is walking through a time of depression, please remember God promises to walk with us every step of the way. Be proactive as parents in making sure your son/daughter gets the help they need.
According to National Mental Health Association (NMHA), here are the classic symptoms of clinical depression:

* Persistent, sad, or anxious mood.
* Anger, restlessness, irritability.
* Sleeplessness, or not enough sleep.
* Reduced appetite and weight loss, or increased appetite and weight gain.
* Loss of pleasure and interest in things once enjoyed.
* Persistent physical symptoms that don't respond to treatment (such as chronic pain or digestive disorders).
* Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions.
* Fatigue or loss of energy.
* Feeling guilty, hopeless or worthless.
* Thoughts of suicide or death.

If your teen has any of these symptoms lasting two weeks or more, you may be looking at clinical depression.

Here are some questions that might open the door of communication between you and your teen! Have fun!

1. When you are having a bad day, how do you think you react? Do you find it easy to bounce back after a bad day, or does it take a long time to feel better? Why?

2. Do you have any friends at school or church who you think might be depressed? What makes you think that?

3. When things go wrong, who do you go to for advice and support? Why?

4. When you feel depressed or sad, what do you do (hobbies, music, computer, etc.) to help you deal with your feelings? Why?
Pray that...

1. God will give you wisdom and discernment when there is suspicion that your son/daughter might be dealing with clinical depression.

2. God will give you strength and comfort to get the necessary help for your teen if they are dealing with depression.

3. Your teen will feel comfortable in talking to you or someone they trust about any personal issue, including depression.

4. God will be your protector, encourager, friend, and physician in any and every part of your family.

"Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am faint; O Lord, heal me, for my bones are in agony. My soul is in anguish. How long, O Lord, how long? I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears." Psalm 6:2-3,6 (NIV)

If we were honest, this could have been a prayer most of us have prayed before. The person crying out in this prayer is not a new Christian who can't get his life on track. This was King David, a man after God's own heart! We know that David was not perfect, but his life and heart was to reflect God in everything he did. Because this was his desire, God heard his cries and answered his prayer. We know because of what David said in Psalm 23:6, "Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." Cling to this promise! While depressing days will come, our hope is in Him and the promise of heaven.

Did you know...

* Studies indicate that 1 in 5 children have some sort of mental, behavioral, or emotional problem, and that 1 in 10 may have a serious emotional problem. Among adolescents, 1 in 8 may suffer from depression. (about-teen-depression.com)

* Findings by the Heritage Foundation say that about 25% of sexually active girls say they are depressed all, most, or a lot of the time; 8% of girls who are not sexually active feel the same. (usatoday.com)

* Major depression is the No. 1 psychological disorder in the western world. It is growing in all age groups, in virtually every community, and the growth is seen most in the young, especially teens. At this rate of increase, it will be the 2nd most disabling condition in the world by 2020, behind heart disease. (clinical-depression.co.uk)

* Although statistics show that girls are twice as likely as boys to develop clinical depression, this is misleading. It has been reported that girls are more likely to disclose their depressive symptoms, or seek out help than boys. (peaceandhealing.com)

"Travail writes songs with a conscience" according to their website. The band got together when Matt Leslie and Daniel McKay decided to form a band that could serve as a role model for kids who felt disillusioned with popular heavy music. They played several venues in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area building up their fan base. At this time two old members were replaced with new ones. Travail continued playing any time they could at such festivals as Texas Rockfest and Texas Tomfest. HM Magazine featured Travail as an "up and coming band". Their album "Beautiful Loneliness" is full of hard core metal with a hip-hop flavor. metro1music.com

Kidzworld.com asked teens what their favorite fashion trend is for spring 2004. Here are the answers...

20% - Stripes.
7% - Raffia bags.
11% - Skirt over pants.

Albums:
"Godsmack" - 1998
"Awake" - 2000
"Faceless" - 2003
"The Other Side" - 2004
Biography:
This multi-platinum hard-rock group, Godsmack, has reached top levels of success according to the music industry. Their self-titled debut album sold four million copies. "Awake", the band's second album released sold nearly three million. Other awards include Grammy nominations for Best Hard Rock Performance and Best Rock Song in 2003. The group honed its sound and songs on the club circuit in 1995. Local producers began selling 1000 albums a week until the group was signed with Universal/Republic. Although Sully, one of the band members, is a warlock and practices witchcraft, he states, "Witchcraft really has nothing to do with the band. It's just something that I do on a personal level...it keeps me centered and grounded." (godsmack.com)

Potential Controversy:
While their newest release does not contain a parental advisory, the other three albums did and are filled with crude and foul language throughout. Most of the subject matter deals with bad relationships and breakups.

Parent Q&A
"We (the guys in the band) all believe very strongly in karma, so we try to be as good people as we can because we know it will come back at you and bite you." (launch.com) Q: What makes someone a "good" person? Is a "good" lifestyle based on faith or works? How does this quote differ from what we believe as Christians?
